Mankato assault victim Kolstad transferred to Twin Cities for rehab

Isaac Kolstad, the former Minnesota State University, Mankato football player who was seriously injured in a Mankato assault, was transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation program in Twin Cities Tuesday, according to reports.

Kolstad, 24, had been at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato since he was attacked outside a downtown bar May 11. He suffered a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury in the assault, and has undergone a number of surgeries so far during the recovery process.

The family released a statement Tuesday saying Kolstad "continues to make progress in his recovery," and calling the transfer to the rehab program a "big step in that journey [to recovery]," KARE 11 reports.

Earlier this week Mike Fleming, Kolstad's brother-in-law, wrote on a CaringBridge page that Kolstad has been participating in daily standing exercises. Since he's been put on less-sedating medications, Kolstad has also been able interact with his 2-week-old daughter more, including "holding" her and patting her back, the post said.

In the statement, his family also thanked the community for their continued support. Since the assault, several fundraisers have been set up to help his wife and two young children with medical bills.

Former Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson, 20, of Mankato, and Trevor Shelley, 21, of St. Peter, have each been charged with one count of first degree assault and one count of third degree assault in connection with the May 11 assault.
