Everyone loves a crazy playoff finish, and that's exactly what the Minnesota State men's hockey team gave fans on Saturday night in the WCHA championship game.
Trailing Bowling Green 2-0 with under two minutes to play, the Mavericks pulled their goalie and scored twice to force overtime, and then tallied the game-winning goal to secure the conference tournament championship and a likely No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Mavericks will learn their NCAA Tournament fate during Sunday's selection show, which begins at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. It's all but a guarantee at this point that the Mavericks get one of the top four seeds, with two of the three others going to St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Duluth.
UMD defeated SCSU in double overtime to win Saturday's NCHC tournament championship.
Jayson Moy of USCHO believes SCSU will get the No. 1 overall seed, with the rest of the No. 1 seeds going to UMD, MSU and Massachusetts. It would set the stage for the possibility of three Minnesota teams reaching the Frozen Four, which has never been done before, let alone just two Minnesota making the Frozen Four in the same year.
