May gives up 8, Orioles club Twins in series opener

The Minnesota Twins played like a team that had traveled half way across the country as they were beaten by the Baltimore Orioles 9-1 on Friday night at Camden Yards.

The Twins arrived at their Baltimore hotel after 4 a.m. after their extra innings win in Kansas City on Thursday night.

A grand slam from Chris Davis in the fourth inning broke open what was a 1-0 game.

Trevor May pitched strong in the first three innings, but he got into trouble in the fourth after giving up a base hit and then hitting the next two hitters to load the bases.

May then walked J.J Hardy and gave up the home run to Davis.

But the Orioles weren't done there. In the fifth, former Twins outfielder Delmon Young clubbed a two-run homer.

May (0-4) gave up eight runs on six hits while striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings.

Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez (7-7) held the Twins to one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out six to pick up his seventh win of the season.

There was a bit of Twins' history made during the game.

Plouffe's home run was really the only Twins bright spot on an otherwise disappointing night.

The Twins will try and bounce back on Saturday. Kyle Gibson (11-10) heads to the mound for Minnesota against Baltimore's Chris Tillman (11-5).

First pitch is at 6:05.
