Minnesota Duluth wins college hockey's national championship

For the second time in university history, the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs are the national champions of college hockey. 

UMD won a 2-1 nail biter over Notre Dame at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Saturday night, joining their 2011 team as the only squads in school history to win the national title. 

The Bulldogs struck for two goals in the first period and held on for dear life the rest of the way, with tallies coming from senior captain Karson Kuhlman (Esko, Minnesota) and Jared Thomas (Hermantown, Minnesota).  

This year's title is remarkable considering they were the last at-large team into the tournament, only getting in because the Gophers were ousted by a freakish series of events on the final Sunday before the NCAA Tournament began.

UMD's 2011 championship run featured a 4-3 win over Notre Dame in the semifinals before they defeated Michigan 3-2 in overtime in the title game.
