Minnesota high school girls basketball team snaps 84-game losing streak

The Climax-Fisher girls basketball team received some national headlines for their victory this week.

Their 62-58 double-overtime-victory over Bagley on Tuesday snapped an 84-game losing streak. According to the Fargo Forum, it was the first win for the Knights since Jan. 13, 2011.

But the way they won it was even more remarkable.

The Knights have eight players on their roster. Four of them fouled out of the game before regulation ended – meaning the team played the end of the game and the first overtime 4-against-5.

Then another player fouled out with 3:06 remaining in the second overtime. The three girls remaining on the court for Climax-Fisher were the three least experienced players on the team.

One of them was Mikayla Vasek, who later told the Forum:

“I was scared. They had five and we were probably the three most inexperienced varsity players. I knew we could do it. We just had to give it all of our heart and desire. We couldn’t stop. We didn’t have a choice.”

The Knights won with defense and free throws, making 12-of-17 from the line in the overtimes to win it.

Deadspin notes it was the first high school win for any of the players – and for coach Jonathon Vonesh, who was around for 48 of the losses.

The day after the game, Vonesh described the emotion of the victory to the Forum this way:

“It was like we won a championship. Kids jumped off the bench. Parents ran down. It was awesome. If you can’t get excited after a win like that, there’s nothing that’s going to get you excited.”
