Minnesota native Phil Housley named to Hockey Hall of Fame

After an NHL career that spanned 23 seasons, Minnesota native Phil Housley has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame's class of 2015.

Housley joins Nicklas Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov, Chris Pronger, Angela Ruggiero, Peter Karmanos Jr. and Bill Hay in voting that was announced on Monday.

There's no debating the South St. Paul High School product has Hall of Fame credentials.

Housley was drafted sixth overall by Buffalo in 1982. During his 23-year career, Housley played for eight different teams, but spent the first eight years with the Sabres.

He is the second-leading U.S.-born scorer in NHL history with 1,232 points (338 goals and 894 assists).

The Star Tribune's Michael Russo notes that he is also the fourth-leading scorer among defensemen in league history. Only Ray Borque, Paul Coffey and Al McInnis have more points.

Additionally, Housley represented the U.S. at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, winning a silver medal, and twice in the Canada Cup. He was also a seven-time NHL All-Star.

Despite the accomplishments, it was still quite the wait for the defensemen who last played in 2003.

"The players who went in before me are really great players who deserve to be in there, but you always have a little doubt because it has been such a long period now," Housley said in a statement on "You sort of come to this point every summer and see who gets elected, but I can forget all those years in the past now because I'm actually going in."
