New stadium could be home to future college football title game
AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, was the venue for the first College Football Playoff National Championship game on Monday night. Local officials from the new Vikings stadium committee attended the game to get a glimpse of what it takes to host the championship event, the Pioneer Press reports.
Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA), told the newspaper that Minnesota "could definitely" host a future college football title game.
Bids to host the 2019 and 2020 title games can be submitted beginning next month; Kelm-Helgen said they are strongly considering doing so.
The new Minnesota stadium is scheduled to open in 2016. The committee has already been awarded the 2018 Super Bowl and the 2019 NCAA men's basketball Final Four.
The MSFA unsuccessfully submitted a bid to host the College Football Championship in 2017. That bid was won by Tampa Bay, as noted by MPR last year.
Meanwhile, KFAN has a side-by-side view of what the Metrodome would have looked like next to the new stadium, as it stands today – about 35 percent constructed, according to the Star Tribune.
