Minnesota State-Mankato has reached the NCAA Division II baseball National Championship game.

The Mavericks defeated St. Edwards, 6-5 in the national semifinals Thursday night at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Minnesota State (42-8) starting pitcher Jason Hoppe set an NCAA record for most consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run.

The right-hander from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota reached 54 1/3 scoreless innings before allowing a run in the fourth inning. Prior to that, he hadn't allowed a run since April 7. He needed just two innings to tie the previous record of 54.

Hoppe didn't factor in the decision as he allowed three earned runs over five innings.

Nick Sutherland earned the win out of the bullpen. He allowed just one run over three innings while striking out four.

The 2-3-4 hitters for the Mavericks -- Lucas Skjefte, Connor McCallum and Nolan Johnson -- combined for nine hits and five RBI in the game.

Minnesota State will play the winner of Tampa/Grand Valley State in the championship game Saturday night.
