After leading his team to the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Hockey Tournament, Minnesota State-Mankato's Mike Hastings on Wednesday was named the winner of the 2015 Spencer Penrose Award as the Division I Coach of the Year.

"Being nominated for this award is truly very humbling. I have been fortunate this year to work with two of the best assistant coaches in the game today in Todd Knott and Darren Blue," Hastings said, according to MSU-Mankato's website. "Coaches go nowhere without their players and I enjoyed the journey with this group in the 2014-15 season. I'm very honored to be selected for this award and to be included in the group of finalists alone is a tremendous honor."

Here is the official release from the American Hockey Coaches Association.

The Mavericks went 29-8-3 en route to regular season and tournament championships in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. MSU also was awarded the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament before bowing out in a first-round upset to Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Mavericks spent five weeks atop the college hockey polls in 2014-15.

According to the WCHA, Hastings owns a record of 79-36-7 in three years at MSU; the 79 victories are the most of any Division I team over that span.

SB Nation notes that Hastings inherited a team in 2011-12 that was coming off an 11-win season. The Mavericks have won at least 24 games all three years under Hastings.
