Minnesota teen hauls in whopper of a sturgeon from Wisconsin lake

David Jacobson is only 13, but he already has impressive fish tales to tell; the Duluth News Tribune says he caught a 57-inch muskie when he was just 8.

The teen, who hails from Garrison, Minnesota, topped himself last Saturday with the lake sturgeon her reeled in from Yellow Lake in Burnett County, Wisconsin.

The fish measured 86 inches in length. Its weight is unknown because the fish was released, but it's estimated that it would have tipped the scales at 160 pounds.

WCCO explains how impressive that is: David is 18 inches shorter and nearly 60 pounds lighter than his big catch.

The Wisconsin state record lake sturgeon — also caught in Yellow Lake, in 1979, was 79 inches long. Meanwhile, Minnesota’s record lake sturgeon, taken on the Kettle River in 1994, was 70 inches long and weighed 94 pounds, 4 ounces.

But the fish won’t count as a record because David's dad Erik set the hook, while the boy reeled it in. The rule requires that only one person can fight the fish.

Once the fish was hooked, it took about half an hour of strenuous tug-of-war to bring it in.

“My brother started screaming, ‘It’s a shark!’" David said. "At that time, we knew it was a behemoth.”
