It's Minnesota's Olympics, the rest of the U.S. is just along for the ride.

The contribution of the Land of 10,000 Lakes to Team USA's stellar Olympic showing has not gone unnoticed on the East Coast, where the New York Times writes "Team USA? More like Team Minnesota."

It's fitting that after cross-country skiing heroics, Afton's Jessie Diggins will carry the U.S. flag during the Winter Olympics closing ceremony, given Minnesota's contribution to the U.S. effort.

As well as her gold, we've had Chisholm native John Shuster lead his curling team (4 out of 5 of whom are from Minnesota) to the gold-medal game.

Then there's the gold-winning women's hockey team, which comprises seven Minnesotan players and two coaching members.

And that's not even to mention Lindsey Vonn, the St. Paul native who took home bronze in the women's downhill.

Should Shuster and his team win gold in the curling final on Saturday, Minnesota will have won 3 out of Team USA's 9 gold medals.

Diggins to carry the flag

Team USA confirmed on Friday morning that Diggins has been handed the prestigious honor after a vote from her fellow American Olympians.

It comes after she won in the women's team sprint in incredible circumstances.

In a near-photo finish, she just crossed the line ahead of Sweden after coming from behind right at the end.

Relive this incredible moment, with amazing commentary by Duluth college coach Chad Salmela (he's the one losing it).

The two-time Olympian along with teammate Kikkan Randall became the first to win cross-country gold for Team USA in Olympic history.

"This is such an incredible honor for me,” said Diggins on the Team USA website. "I’m really humbled and moved that the athletes voted for me. It’s so inspiring to feel the support and cheering from everyone."
