Sunday was a special day for Spring Lake Park graduate Troy Merritt. He won the Quicken Loans National – it was his first win on the PGA Tour.

Merritt closed the tournament with a 4-under 67 winning the tournament by three strokes over Rickie Fowler. He took the lead after shooting a tournament-record 61 Saturday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainsville, Virginia.

Merritt finished the tournament at 18-under 266.

Fowler finished with a 69 on Sunday to finish at 15-under for second. David Lingmerth finished third at 14-under.

It was Merritt's 96th career start on the tour, and The Associated Press notes he is the 10th first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.

"It's amazing how you can dream of winning a golf tournament your entire life and you've got it scripted and when it happens, you're not thinking," Merritt told reporters afterward. "You don't remember what your name is. You're just reacting. That's all it was."
