Musher Nathan Schroeder was the first to cross the finish line of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon early Wednesday morning.

Schroeder, of Warba, Minnesota, has been racing for nearly 25 years, according to his biography on the event's website, and this was his fourth Beargrease win.

He won the Beargrease in 2010, 2013 and 2014, the race's website shows. And this win ties him with Jamie Nelson at the top of the Beargrease champion list, the Beargrease Facebook page says.

Schroeder and the other marathoners began the race Sunday morning at the Highway 2 gravel pit in Two Harbors, and after racing for 383 miles through northeastern Minnesota, he crossed the finish line at Billy's Bar in Rice Lake at 5:52 a.m., the race's timesheet shows.

He was about a half-hour ahead of his closest competitor, Jason Campeau, of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, who crossed the finish line at 6:34 a.m. Wednesday, the timesheet shows. It was Campeau's first time racing the Beargrease marathon, the event said on Facebook.

Ryan Anderson, last year's winner, finished third, at 7:31 a.m.

Next up for Schroeder is the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska, Duluth Trading says. It'll be his third time competing in the event, for which he was named "rookie of the year" in 2014.
