After helping the Nashville Predators to the Stanley Cup Final as an assistant coach, Minnesota native Phil Housley has a new gig.

Housley was named the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.

He'll become the 18th coach in Sabres franchise history. Housley has deep roots with Buffalo as the Sabres drafted him sixth overall in the 1982 NHL Draft. He spent eight seasons there.

After retiring from the NHL in 2003, Housley held the record for most points (1,232) by an American-born player until Mike Modano broke it in 2007.

Housley returned to Minnesota after his playing career, where he coached Stillwater High School's boy's hockey team.

The Minnesota native will be tabbed with helping the Sabres win their first Stanley Cup. Buffalo has been to the Cup twice – most recently in 1999 – but have never hoisted the trophy.
