Monday Morning quarterback: Punting & Ponder

The day after another loss, everyone is talking about Christian Ponder and if the Vikings should have let him extend a late-game drive.

The Vikings had the ball on their own 36-yard line with 2:37 to go versus the Packers Sunday -- and punted on fourth down, just six points down. Green Bay got the ball and then ran out the clock. It's the perfect Monday morning quarterback question: Should the Vikings have gone for it?

Over at The Daily Norseman, they're calling it the right call. The Access Vikings writers at the Star Tribune football writers agreed, as did Adrian Peterson.

The Strib's Michael Rand? Not so much, and offers this excellent statistical analysis on how the Vikings had nothing to lose by going for it.

The fact that the Vikings were even that close to the Packers late in the fourth quarter amazed millions of fans. How did the Vikes stay in it? Christian Ponder. Sure, it's a team effort, but it looks like Vikings fans now have a young quarterback they can rally behind.

As the Star Tribune's Jim Souhan put it, Ponder gave the Vikes exactly what they needed: guts, leadership and life.

In fact, Ponder praise seems to be everywhere:

The Daily Norseman calls him something to believe in.

Pioneer Press writer Tom Powers says Ponder's very first toss lifted the spirits of a bedraggled fan base.

As for the out-of-town press, the praise was a bit harder to come by. Instead, they keyed on Ponder's third quarter mistakes -- the two interceptions to Charles Woodson. As the Green Bay Press-Gazette put it, that match-up was hardly fair.

How about you? Do you have Ponder-mania yet? Or did he make too many mistakes for you to jump on the bandwagon? Let us know, right here...
