Minnesota United is building up a full head of steam in its stadium plans, appointing Mortenson Construction to construct the 20,000-seat arena in St. Paul.

The team made the announcement Wednesday and hopes the Golden Valley-based firm can start working next year on the club's privately-funded, $120 million stadium at corner of Snelling and University Avenues.

Mortenson is already in the process of building the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and previously worked on Target Field, TCF Bank Stadium and the Xcel Energy Center, so it has form for major projects in the Twin Cities.

"We are very, very pleased and fortunate to have Mortenson Construction as our partner as we build a new, world-class soccer stadium and begin a larger redevelopment of Midway area," owner Bill McGuire said in the news release.

"Mortenson is a Minnesota company that is internationally recognized as builders of great sports facilities."

According to its website, Mortenson is also building the Colorado State University stadium and SunTrust Park, the future home of the Atlanta Braves baseball franchise.

It will also be partnering up once again with architects Populous, who were taken on last month to design a stadium fit for the team's entry to Major League Soccer in 2017. The pair worked together on Target Field, TCF Bank Stadium and the Xcel Energy Center.

Populous has been responsible for some of the most high profile soccer stadium projects seen in the world over the past decade, with Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and the World Cup Final stadium in Johannesburg among its designs.

It also designed the stadium for the 2012 London Olympics.
