The Mavericks of Minnesota State Mankato came up a bit short in their first-ever national championship game, losing 13-0 to Colorado State-Pueblo in the NCAA Division II title game in Kansas City, Kansas Saturday afternoon.

CSUP's defense stymied the Mavericks' powerful offense, which gained only 265 yards in the game compared to the season average of 459 yards, according to the Mankato Free Press.

CSUP (14-1) scored 10 points in the second quarter, on a field goal and touchdown in the final minute of the half to take a 10-0 lead at halftime.

It was the first time MSU has been held scoreless in the first half since 2010, and it was their first shutout since 2004, the Free Press notes.

The ThunderWolves scored another field goal early in the third quarter and kept the Mavericks at bay to win the game.

"We didn't come into the game satisfied. We came in to compete. We came in to win," said MSU coach Todd Hoffner, according to the Associated Press. "You get one chance to compete, and if you don't get it done, you have a result like you had today."

Ricky Lloyd and Nick Pieruccini shared quarterback duties for the Mavericks (14-1), but neither one had much success, the Associated Press notes. Lloyd threw for 99 yards and Pieruccini threw for 61 yards.

Mavericks' running back Connor Thomas, who rushed for more than 1,300 yards this season, was held to 25 yards rushing.

It was the first trip to the title game for both teams, and MSU (14-1) was attempting to wrap up an undefeated season.

Despite the loss, Hoffner is likely still pleased with the outcome of the season after a tumultuous couple of years.

During that time he was placed on leave, then fired, then reinstated in the wake of child pornography charges for having a video of his two young children, naked, on his university-issued cell phone.

The charges were eventually dismissed, but he was not given his coaching job back. Hoffner took the head coaching job at Minot State, before a judge ordered MSU to reinstate him last April.

Hoffner returned to the team in August, and led him to an undefeated regular season, one victory short of a national title.
