Nation's longest high school football winning streak ends in Minnesota at 71 games
The nation's longest winning streak in high school football came to an end on Friday night when Lake City defeated Caledonia 30-13.
Caledonia's loss was its first since Nov. 15, 2014, when the Warriors were defeated by BOLD in the Class AA State Semifinals. Since then, the Warriors rattled off 71 straight wins, which was the ninth-longest winning streak in United States history.
One of the key figures in that streak was Eli King, who is a two-sport standout for the Warriors. King is 81st nationally on 247Sports' 2022 basketball recruit rankings and received scholarship offers to play quarterback from several schools including Notre Dame, Iowa and Minnesota.
King committed to play basketball for Iowa State this spring but decided to focus solely on the court this season, leaving the Warriors with a new quarterback.
The Tigers took advantage as their defense picked off Caledonia quarterback Lewis Doyle twice. With Lake City quarterback Justin Wohlers throwing for 164 yards and running for 101, the Tigers were able to use a goal line stand and a 57-yard touchdown run from Kris Ryan in the fourth quarter to end the streak.
"That streak is humbling, but it shows what our community has done," Caledonia head coach Carl Fruechte told the Rochester Post Bulletin. "It shows what all of our coaches, all of our players and all of parents have done."
Caledonia is the five-time reigning Class AA state champion in Minnesota.
