The North Dakota State University Athletics Department has named the school's current defensive coordinator as the the football program’s new head coach.

WDAY reported that Chris Klieman was named to lead the Bison football program at a morning press conference at the Fargodome. NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor introduced Klieman, 46, who has been coaching on the staff of the NDSU football program for three years and is completing his second year as defensive coordinator.

The Fargo Forum said Kleiman joined NDSU in March 2011 following a nine-year stay at his alma mater, Northern Iowa. A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Klieman was a three-time All-Gateway Conference defensive back while attending Northern Iowa and went on to be the defensive coordinator, co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 2006-10.

Klieman will replace outgoing head coach Craig Bohl, who accepted the head coach position at the University of Wyoming last week. The Associated Press noted the move will push Bohl into the realm of high paid college coaches. The story said he will be guaranteed $750,000 in the first year of his five-year contract with Wyoming. His pay will increase each year and reach $950,000 in the final year. With various incentives, he could earn more than $1 million a year.

Bohl, 55, will stay at NDSU through the end of his 11th year with the program. Forum Communications had the story of the undefeated Bison Saturday 48-14 victory over Coastal Carolina. The Bison host the national semifinals at 7:05 p.m. Friday night, a game that will be aired on ESPN2. Two-time defending national champion NDSU has won 22 consecutive games.
