A Nebraska man died after falling out of a fishing boat in northeast Minnesota Wednesday, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says.

The 64-year-old was a passenger in the boat on Lake Vermilion, the sheriff's office says, and fell out as it was traveling through the Cable Bay area in the eastern portion of the lake. He was pulled out of the water around 7:30 p.m., taken to shore by boat, then transported to Essentia-Health in Virginia where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office says he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

He has not been identified pending notification of his family.

On June 5, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said one person had died in 2014 as the result of a boating accident, and six people have drowned. The next day, an 88-year-old Stockton man fell out of a canoe while fishing on the Mississippi River near Winona. His body was found the following day, about 50 feet from where his canoe had turned over.

From 2002-2012, Minnesota averaged about 54 total boating fatalities and non-boating drownings each year.
