Carson Wentz of North Dakota State University became the highest-drafted quarterback from an FCS college when he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the second pick in the NFL Draft Thursday night.

Wentz was also the second quarterback drafted, as the Los Angeles Rams selected California's Jared Goff with the first overall pick.

Wentz, a Bismarck native, led the Bison to their fifth straight FCS-National Championship last season – throwing for 1,651 yards and 17 touchdowns in an injury-shortened season with NDSU last year. He also ran for 294 yards and six additional scores.

His meteoric rise up the NFL draft boards has captivated the school, its fans and the entire state of North Dakota.

At 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds with a strong arm, scouts say Wentz has all the physical tools to be a successful quarterback in the NFL.

The questions around him center around the fact that he started just two years for the Bison who play in the FCS division.

He is the first non-FBS quarterback to be drafted in the first round since the Ravens drafted Joe Flacco in 2008 and just the fifth overall. Wentz also became the first NDSU quarterback to ever be drafted into the NFL.

But some view Wentz as a perfect fit for the Eagles. He may or may not be asked to start right away, Eagles coach Doug Peterson says that as long as Sam Bradford is on the team he's their starter.

But Bradford has asked Philadelphia to be traded and his future with the team is unknown, so whether Wentz will be allowed to learn the NFL game before he's asked to start remains to be seen.
