NFLPA investigates if medic should have spotted Viking Fusco's concussion

The NFL Players Association is investigating why Minnesota Vikings guard Brandon Fusco didn't miss a snap during last week's victory over the Lions despite sustaining a concussion.

NBC Pro Football Talk reports that the NFLPA is probing why an ATC spotter apparently failed to take action after Fusco sustained the injury.

According to the website, Fusco appeared to be struggling to get to his feet after a block that involved helmet-to-helmet contact in the 26-16 win at TCF Bank Stadium.

The guard has been listed as "questionable" for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, according to Vikings.com, having missed practice on Wednesday, and only returned to full practice on Friday.

ATC spotters are independent certified athletic trainers who attend ever game to watch for potential injuries, NFL.com says, and this year they were given the power to halt the game for a medical timeout if they see if a player is in distress.

The ATC system was instituted after Colt McCoy took a helmet-to-helmet hit in 2011 and was sent back on the field without getting a concussion test.

It was changed to allow spotters to call a timeout after this year's Super Bowl, when Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman needed a concussion check, but the ATC spotter wasn't able to until after the drive ended, Pro Football Talk notes.
