Representatives from the National Hockey League and the players union met for 30 minutes Tuesday night to discuss the most recent proposal being passed back and forth between the two parties to find an end the player lockout, The Associated Press reported.

The latest round of talks centers around the offer the league made to the players last Thursday.

The players submitted a counteroffer to the league's proposal Monday -- and the brief discussions Tuesday concerned the NHL's counteroffer to the player's proposal.

Both sides are expected to meet again Wednesday.

The league recently canceled all games through Jan. 14. More than half of the season's games have already been wiped out by the player lockout.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman implied Tuesday that the time may be drawing near to scrap the rest of the season, The AP reported.

Bettman said the league needs to "drop the puck by Jan. 19 if we're going to play a 48-game season," adding, "We don't think it makes sense to play a season any shorter than that."
