NHL scraps 2 more weeks of games, All-Star game

The National Hockey League on Friday canceled two more weeks of the regular season and axed the 2013 All-Star Game in Columbus. All-Star weekend was to be Jan. 24-27.

That means there will be no games through Dec. 14, which means at least one-third of the season has been canceled, and the entire season is in jeopardy, Reuters reports.

The NHL and its players remain mired in contract disputes. The two sides are at odds on how to split $3.3 billion in revenue.

The new cancellations were no surprise. The two sides had an unproductive negotiating session on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

League officials have said the NHL is losing $18-$20 million a day during the lockout, Reuters notes.

Of course, the lockout has an ever-widening ripple effect on local business in cities with NHL teams. Bars and restaurants around the Xcel Energy Center where the Minnesota Wild play lose vital business every time a game is not played.
