No. 1 St. Cloud State gets 'Holy Cross'd' by Air Force

Air Force blocked 29 shots and their goalie was unbelievable.

The top seed in the NCAA hockey tournament, St. Cloud State, took one where the sun doesn't shine in a 4-1 massive upset loss to Air Force Friday night.

SCSU entered the tourney as the No. 1 overall seed while Air Force was the last team in, the No. 16 seed.

SCSU's loss is similar to what the Gophers experienced 11 years ago in a loss to Holy Cross, and what Minnesota State-Mankato dealt with in 2015 as the No. 1 overall seed losing in the first round to RIT.

The Huskies actually dominated the puck, taking an astonishing 40 more shots than Air Force, but 29 of them were blocked and Air Force goalie Billy Christopoulos – not Jesse Katsopolis from Full House – made 39 saves.

"They blocked 30 shots tonight and their goalie...that may be one of the better goalie performances I've seen in a long time," Huskies coach Bob Motzko said, via the St. Cloud Times

This is the second time in three years that SCSU has lost in the first round as a No. 1 seed. In 2016, they were the No. 2 overall seed and lost to No. 15 Ferris State.

Meanwhile, Minnesota-Duluth rallied to beat MSU-Mankato 3-2 in overtime and will play Air Force at 8 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line.
