No. 12 Badgers hand top-ranked Gophers first Big Ten loss of season
It wasn't Minnesota's night at the Kohl Center, something that has been said in multiple sports before, as No. 12 Wisconsin upset the Gopher men's hockey team 2-1.
The rare Thursday contest saw the Badgers open the scoring in front of a raucous home crowd in the first period, a power-play goal for Frankie Simonelli.
The nation's top team evened the score just two minutes later, Taylor Cammarata scoring to knot things at one.
After a scoreless second period, Jake McCabe scored the decisive goal with 6:13 left in the final period, and even with an empty net, the Gophers couldn't pull one back late.
The loss snaps the Gophers 14-game unbeaten streak, which was their longest since the 2006-07 season, and goalie Adam Wilcox streak of the same length, which was the longest in the country.
The two sides conclude their series tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at Kohl Center, also the home of Wisconsin hoops, the Badgers with a chance to split the season series with the Gophers after being swept earlier this season.
