Northern Michigan football player dies after workout

Northern Michigan University is mourning the loss of a student-athlete.

A small Division II school in Michigan is mourning the loss of one of their student athletes today. Northern Michigan University announced that starting left guard Anthony Herbert passed away on Tuesday.

ESPN reports that Herbert participated in a workout, went to breakfast and returned to his dorm room, where EMT's were called to tend to a medical emergency he suffered.

"Anthony's passing is felt deeply by many," said Northern Michigan Athletics Director Forrest Karr. "He made a positive impact on our campus and was everything we hope for in a student-athlete. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates, and we are focused on supporting them during this difficult time."

According to MLive, the cause of Herbert's death hasn't been determined.

"In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man," said Northern Michigan football coach Kyle Nystrom. "He was well respected by his coaches and teammates and was a leader on the offensive line. We are devastated by this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our prayers."

Herbert, a red-shirt freshman and native of Lapeer, Michigan, started all 11 games for the Wildcats at left guard last season. He received all-GLIAC academic team honors during the 2016 fall semester.

A 2013 study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that there are about 12 fatalities per year among high school and college football players in the U.S. According to the study the most common causes include cardiac failure, brain injury and heat illness.

The university is providing counseling services to anyone who needs it. The school says details on funeral services are forthcoming.
