Now that he's a Packer, Guion's football smarts called into question

One day after signing with rival Green Bay, former Vikings defensive tackle Letroy Guion is getting criticized in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The article says new Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer chose to release Guion because he "lacked mental acuity." That's a strong statement, one that's backed up with a fairly scathing quote from an unnamed NFL personnel man familiar with Minnesota's coaching staff.

"If you keep it simple he'll be OK," the anonymous source said. "He'll jump offside, do all the (expletive) that drives you nuts. The game doesn't come easy for him. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays good. It's a good signing for (relatively) nothing. But there will be some headaches."

Another unnamed scout told the paper that the Vikings thought Guion "was going to develop, but he just never got any better."

In 66 career games with the Vikings, the 26-year-old from Florida State registered five sacks and 90 tackles, according to ESPN's player profile.

FREE-AGENT UPDATES

Meanwhile, the Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings are still in the mix to sign free-agent defensive tackle Henry Melton. The former Chicago Bear met with the Vikings last Thursday. He's also visited Seattle, Dallas and St. Louis. Melton missed all but three games last season because of a torn ACL. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2012.

Vikings beat writer Chris Tomasson writes that Minnesota seems to be waiting on Melton before deciding what to do with 11-year veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams, who is also a free-agent. Williams has said he would like to finish his career with the Vikings.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Vikings announced that former New York Jets offensive guard Vladimr Decasse is visiting today. Decasse, a second-round pick in the 2010 draft, started four of 16 games played last season.

Jared Allen is scheduled to meet with the Dallas Cowboys today.
