Rachel Bootsma is busy working to be one of the best swimmers in the country. The Star Tribune reports the 18-year-old will compete in Olympic trials for the 100-meter backstroke in June. To join the U.S. team heading to the London Olympics this summer, the six-time state high school champion has to finish in at least second place at the trials.

Rachel Bootsma, of Eden Prairie, swam the 11th-fastest qualifying time in the morning heats at the Summer Olympic Games in London. Her time of 1 minute, 00.03 seconds was short her personal best of 59.10, set last month at the Olympic trials, the Star Tribune reports. The top 16 swimmers compete in Sunday’s semifinals, with the eight fastest moving on to the finals Monday. The 100 meter semifinal heats are set for 2:49 p.m. CDT.

Gabriele Anderson, a Minnesotan who twice beat cancer on her way to the Olympic trials as a 1,500-meter runner, has won her appeal to be reinstated after being disqualified on the heat sheet for Sunday's final in Eugene, Ore. Anderson had qualified Friday with a time of 4 minutes, 10.08 seconds, seventh-best in two semifinal heats, but was disqualified after another runner claimed Anderson impeded her.
