On this day in 1987...

The Minnesota Twins win their first World Series title, a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 1987 season was manager Tom Kelly's first full year as the leader of the Minnesota Twins. Kelly had taken over for manager Ray Miller the previous year, who was fired with 23 games remaining in the 1986 season.

Kelly finished those games 12-11 before captaining Minnesota to a 85-77 regular season mark in 1987, and leading the Twins to a World Series appearance.

Once there, Minnesota fell behind three games to two in the best-of-seven series, but won back-to-back elimination games, the last of which was closed out by closer Jeff Reardon, who followed Frank Viola's legendary eight-inning masterpiece.

Viola would be named series MVP for his impressive pitching performances throughout the seven game marathon.

Here's the full game for your enjoyment.

The Twins would go on to win a World Series in 1991 as well, famously going from worst-to-first for their second title in five years. They have not been back to the World Series since.
