One of baseball's best quit chewing tobacco the day Tony Gwynn died

It's been more than two years since "Mr. Padre" Tony Gwynn died from salivary gland cancer at the age of 54, and with this year's MLB All-Star Game in San Diego, Gwynn's name is being remembered.

The story that's catching the headlines, however, is one from White Sox left-hander Chris Sale, who says he quit chewing tobacco the day Gwynn died.

"I chewed tobacco from 2007 until the day he died," Sale said Monday, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark. "I quit that day and haven't touched it since. So in a sense I owe him a huge thank you."

According to USA Today, Gwynn was so addicted to chewing tobacco that he continued using it despite having cancer. He went through 1 1/2 tins of Skoal every day.

Sale is the starting pitcher for the American League in Tuesday's All-Star Game. He's 14-3 with a 3.38 ERA this season and his 123 strikeouts rank ninth in the big leagues.
