Hopkins guard Paige Bueckers was named the 2020 Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year on Thursday, adding yet another accolade to cap off a stellar high school career.
Bueckers had a tremendous senior season for the Royals averaging 21 points, 9.2 assists 5.2 steals, and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Royals last season. With Beuckers leading the way, Hopkins reached the Class AAAA title game but saw their season stopped short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite not finishing her career with a state title, Bueckers earned plenty of recognition. She won the 2019-20 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year Award in March and is ranked as the top recruit in the nation in ESPN's 2020 HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings. Bueckers will attend national powerhouse UConn this fall.
Joining Bueckers is Marrietta High School (Ga.) football player Arik Gilbert as Gatorade High School Male Athlete of the Year, To recognize the award, both will be recognized on the cover of the Sept. 2020 issue of Sports Illustrated.
