The man accused of fatally beating a South Dakota toddler, the son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, has been charged with murder.

On Friday afternoon, a Lincoln County grand jury indicted 27-year-old Joseph Patterson of Sioux Falls on second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, aggravated battery of an infant and child abuse, the Argus Leader reports.

Tyrese Robert Ruffin, 2, died at a Sioux Falls hospital on Oct. 11 from injuries suffered during the assault two days earlier.

Tom Wollman, Lincoln County state's attorney, told the newspaper that final autopsy reports for Tyrese are not yet complete, but there was enough evidence to proceed with new charges. Patterson, the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother, was initially charged with aggravated assault before the boy died.

The Associated Press reports Patterson is scheduled for an arraignment this week.

In South Dakota, a second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Peterson missed practice last Wednesday to attend Tyrese's funeral. Peterson told reporters that he had just recently found out Tyrese was his son.

The NFL MVP met the boy for the first time while the child was on life support.
