Perkins: 'I didn't want to be the overpaid guy. Now I am.'

Instead of coming in from the bullpen, Twins reliever Glen Perkins will be going into surgery on Thursday. And he's not very happy about it.

The surgery on his pitching shoulder is something he and the Twins hoped could be avoided. But a setback in Perkins' rehab last month led to the decision to go under the knife and aim toward a recovery in time for spring training.

On Surgery Eve Perkins was pretty frank on Twitter about his disappointment – writing: "Am I disappointed that I can't contribute to our team this year while getting paid a s**t ton of money? Yes, it makes me sick."

And: "Getting paid for not doing anything to help is the thing I feared most when I signed my contract. I didn't want to be the overpaid guy. Well , now I am."

Perkins says the only thing he can control is his rehab as he prepares for spring training.

Here's the whole tweet:

The Pioneer Press noted last week that the outcome of shoulder surgery can vary quite a bit – it's less reliable than Tommy John surgery.

Twins General Manager Terry Ryan told the Associated Press Perkins has fraying in the labrum of his left shoulder and his rotator cuff will be looked at during the surgery by shoulder specialist Dr.Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
