Players walk off field on Hoffner's first day at MSU

Todd Hoffner's return as Minnesota State University's football coach has been met with some opposition from members of the Maverick football team.

Hoffner returned to the practice field Wednesday afternoon with MSU Athletic Director Kevin Buisman, according to the Mankato Free Press.

But players came out of the locker room out of uniform and read a statement saying they wanted Aaron Keen as the coach and refused to practice.

Keen has been serving as the interim head coach of the Mavericks since Hoffner was removed in August of 2012.

Tuesday, Hoffner announced that he would return to Minnesota State to lead the Maverick program after an arbitrator ruled last week that he should be reinstated.

Even some former Mavericks have weighed in. Vikings practice squad wide receiver Adam Thielen is a graduate of MSU and played for both Hoffner and Keen.

Neither Hoffner nor Keen have addressed the media, at this time.

FOX 9 reports Hoffner's wife, Melodee told Paul Blume that although she hadn't heard about the player walkout yet, she knew there were bound to be some bumps with her husband's sudden return.

In his four seasons as the head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato University, Hoffner put together a 34-13 record. The Mavericks won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship in 2011.

In August of 2012, Hoffner was taken off the practice field and faced charges of child pornography stemming from nude images of his children being found on his school-issued cellphone.

Keen stepped in and led the Mavericks to a 13-1 record and a spot the NCAA Division II semifinals.

Hoffner was eventually cleared of the charges, but was reassigned within the athletic department and fired in May of 2013.

Keen, again led the Mavericks to an 11-1 mark in 2013 and things seemed to be settling down in January when Hoffner accepted a job to be the head football coach at conference rival Minot State.

That all changed with last week's ruling from the arbitrator, and Tuesday Hoffner chose to return to Minnesota State.
