Port Authority plays crucial role for both St. Paul ballparks

Whether for or against publicly financed stadiums, one thing is certain: Any city that wants one is going to have a lot of dirty laundry to air.

That's been the case with the groundbreaking for the St. Paul Saints' new ballpark in Lowertown and the presumed demise of the team's current home at Midway Stadium.

All sorts of things, including decades-old manure, are often unearthed, as we found out about Midway Stadium in June.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports on a little-seen player in both ballpark projects: the city's Port Authority.

The Port Authority is acting as a consultant of sorts to St. Paul as it teams with Ryan Cos., the company chosen to build a $63 million, 7,000-seat ballpark off Fifth and Broadway streets, the paper reports. It also will be instrumental in tearing down Midway Stadium and replacing it with new businesses offering more jobs.

The PiPress goes on to list some of the problems that keep cropping up with both sites, but one realty expert says the St. Paul Port Authority is on the case. Or both cases, as it were.

"They know what they're doing," he tells the paper.
