Prep football: Fab Five games of week 8

The final week of the high school football regular season is upon us, and because of MEA, most of the games will be played Wednesday night.

There are a bunch of outstanding games -- games that will decide conference champions -- so let's get started with the five best.

St. Michael-Albertville @ Rogers: The winner of this game claims the Mississippi 8 conference title and the probable No. 1 seed in Class 5A, section 6. STMA is allowing less than 9 points a game while Rogers is scoring nearly 50 points a game.

St. Thomas Academy @ South St. Paul: The Packers can clinch the Classic Suburban title with a win. The Cadets earn a share of the title with a win, although they would own permanent bragging rights over South St. Paul because the conference ends following the current high school sports season. I don't think South St. Paul can fall out of its No. 1 spot in the Class 4A, section 4. STA is jockeying for position in Class 5A, section 5.

Lakeville North @ Rosemount: This will most likely be a hard-hitting, low-scoring battle for the top spot in the South Suburban conference (although Rosemount played on fewer conference game than North). This will also decide the No. 1 seed in Class 6A, section 3. The question is whether Lakeville North's top scoring defense can slow down Rosemount's fourth-ranked scoring offense. I see this one playing out in the 20-17 range.

Benilde-St. Margaret's @ Spring Lake Park: Forget about sharing conference titles, the winner of this one takes the outright North Suburban crown. The Panthers have won five straight after starting the season 0-2. The Red Knights have a high-powered offense that will cause problems for teams in the Class 4A section playoffs.

Osseo @ Totino-Grace: Two of the best in the state meet with unblemished records in the Northwest Suburban conference. Osseo might have the best offense in the state. They can run and throw, and they play great defense (16.3 PAA). Totino-Grace lost to Eden Prairie earlier this season, but that's the only team they've faced with a winning record.
