Prep football: Joe Nelson's Fab Five games of the week

If the games can start and finish without interruption from thunderstorms, this should be a high quality night of high school football. Here my Fab Five games of the week.

An impressive clash between the top two teams in the Lake Conference. Eden Prairie continues to dazzle with blowout and blowout, but the Skippers aren’t terribly far behind. Minnetonka started the season 5-0 before falling at a very good Edina team last week. I look for the Skippers to bounce back with a ton of passion tonight. Unfortunately, the Eagles don’t look like a team that’s ready to lose.

Look out for the Rogers Royals in Class 5A. They are 5-0 and they are winning in convincing fashion. The Royals put a 38-nothing stamp on Cambridge-Isanti last week, and they’ve allowed a touchdown or less in four of five games. Monticello, meanwhile, is 4-1 and they’ve gained plenty of experience in nip-tuck games, with four straight decided by a touchdown or less.

A powerhouse match-up that should provide a great game. Andover suffered its first loss of the season, 20-7 at Osseo last week. No shame in that because Osseo is loaded. Totino is a dominating team that continues to gel with every week. My sources tell me the Eagles will try to put a lot of pressure on Andover QB Connor Wilkie – the same thing Osseo did. If they can duplicate what Osseo did, they’ll win… but it’s going to be a tight game.

South is off to a strange 3-2 start. They lost 7-nothing to Lakeville North in week one, rattled off three straight wins and lost last week at Burnsville, 14-3. Rosemount is a heavy favorite, but South plays good defense, so I’ll predict a close, low-scoring win for the home team. The Irish have won four straight since losing in double overtime to Wayzata in week one. Look out for the Irish for the long haul.

It’s homecoming weekend in Brainerd and the Warriors host a very good Lumberjacks team. The Warriors won a difficult game at St. Cloud Tech, 7-nothing last week to improve to 5-0. Bemidji, also 5-0, is scoring points in bunches. Bemidji went to the state tournament semifinals (lost to Totino-Grace) last year – and in that same year they were defeated soundly at Brainerd, 40-23. This is going to be a tremendous game. I’ll take Brainerd… it’s very difficult to beat them on a regular week, but this is homecoming.
