Prep Winter Warriors: Five schools crushing the competition
Winter sports teams across the state have been impressive this year. If you're new to this list, it features five schools crushing the competition in boys basketball, girls basketball, boys hockey, girls hockey, and wrestling. It's difficult to find schools winning at a high level across the board, but we've found five new schools for this week's list (in no particular order).
5. Osseo Orioles: Sports combined for a 8-3 record last week.
Boys Basketball: 5-0 overall, 3-0 last week with wins over Elk River, Buffalo, and Anoka. Three of the Osseo's elite football players are transitioning into the basketball season with ease.
Girls Basketball: 4-1 overall, 2-0 last week with blowout wins over Elk River and Anoka.
Boys Hockey: 4-2 overall, 1-1 last week. Lost badly to a good Blaine team but bounced back with a 6-2 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong.
Girls Hockey: 2-12 overall, 0-2 last week, but they are the North Metro Stars, not the Osseo Stars.
Wrestling: 2-2 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over Elk River and Robbinsdale Armstrong.
4. Edina Hornets: Sports combined for a 7-1-2 record last week.
Boys Hockey: 7-1 overall, 3-0 last week. Won the Edina Invitational with victories over Grand Rapids, Elk River/Zimmerman, and Eden Prairie. They're so good that they've started charging $50 to tryout!
Girls Hockey: 6-2-4 overall, 0-1-2 last week. Lost 2-1 to No. 2 Hill-Murray and tied No. 1 Roseville and No. 18 Hopkins.
Boys Basketball: 2-4 overall, 2-0 last week. After starting the season 0-4 the Hornets won back-to-back games over Chaska and Orono.
Girls Basketball: 7-0 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over Chaska and No. 3 Lakeville North. Edina will be in the mix to win the class 4A title this year.
3. Apple Valley Eagles: Sports combined for a 9-1 record last week.Wrestling: 3-0 overall, 2-0 last week. Dominated Eagan and breezed through the Rochester wrestling tournament. They’re No. 1 in the nation and preparing for the The Clash in Rochester next week.
Boys Hockey: 3-2-1 overall, 2-0 last week. They defeated Prior Lake and Lakeville North last week. That’s important momentum because five of their next six games are against ranked opponents.
Girls Hockey: 7-4 overall, 1-1 last week. They shutout Prior Lake before being shutout by Lakeville North.
Boys Basketball: 3-1 overall, 2-0 last week. Tyus Jones leads the metro in scoring. This kid is capable of leading the Eagles a long way…and he’s only a sophomore. You can watch him tonight against Chaska.
Girls Basketball: 4-3 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over Somerset (WI) and Bloomington Jefferson.
2. Rochester Mayo Spartans: Sports combined for a 8-1 record last week.
Boys Hockey: 4-2 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over Austin and Fairmont.
Girls Hockey: 7-2 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over No. 19 Dodge County and Austin.
Boys Basketball: 1-2 overall, 1-0 last week. They began the season 0-2 but rebounded with a 53-50 win over Austin.
Girls Basketball: 3-2 overall, 2-0 last week with victories over Rochester John Marshall and Austin. Overall, the Spartan girls have won three straight.
Wrestling: 4-1 overall and had nice win over Austin last week before competing against bigger schools in the Minnesota Christmas Tournament.
1. Minnetonka Skippers: Sports combined for a 9-5 record last week.
Boys Basketball: 6-0 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over Maranatha Christian and Totino-Grace. The great start gained enough attention to garner a spot in the top-ten.
Girls Basketball: 6-0 overall, 1-0 last week with an impressive in over No. 3 New Prague. Speaking of rankings, these girls are ranked No. 3 in the state.
Boys Hockey: 6-0 overall, 2-0 last week wins over Bloomington Jefferson and Hibbing/Chisolm. There is no doubt that the Skippers are a state title contending team.
Girls Hockey: 9-3 overall, 2-0 last week with wins over Andover and Buffalo.
Wrestling: 6-5 overall, 2-5 last week, but they wrestled three straight days. That’s a grind for any high school kid.
