Niklas Backstrom stopped 33 shots to help the Wild defeat the Blues, 3-1 in preseason action at Xcel Energy Center Wednesday night.

The only goal Backstrom allowed came late in the third period when the Wild had already established a three-goal lead.

Matt Cooke netted the first Wild goal, and Minnesota carried the 1-nothing lead into the third period.

Charlie Coyle's outstanding preseason continued when he fired a wrist shot into the back of the net just 38 seconds into the final frame. Torrey Mitchell added a shorthanded goal later in the period.

Minnesota wraps up the exhibition schedule Friday in St. Louis. The season/home opener is next Thursday against the Kings at the X.
