Purple coach search: Roman interview coming Saturday?

Plenty of news in the last few days on the Vikings head coach search, the last bit of which sounds as if it will wrap up the initial portion of interviews for the vacant spot.

According to multiple sources, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who helped lead San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance last year and 11th-highest scoring offense in the league this season, is likely the only other person Minnesota is hoping to interview before narrowing their list of candidates.

NFL.com tells us that the interview could happen Saturday, with Minnesota brass in Charlotte prior to Carolina hosting the 49ers Sunday.

If the interview does not happen tomorrow, it would have to wait until San Francisco's season is over, as NFL rules dictate teams seeking coaches have until Sunday to interview candidates whose teams participated in the wild-card playoff round. San Francisco did that last week, beating Green Bay.

Reports yesterday said Minnesota has narrowed their list of candidates to Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, and an unknown third candidate.

The Vikings are trying to have a decision on their next coach by Jan. 25.
