A big first period led the Gopher women's hockey team to a decisive 7-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Friday night at Ridder Arena.

The Gophers controlled the ice from the early going, dramatically outshooting the Bulldogs

Rachel Ramsey and Meghan Lorence keyed the Gophers offense. Each tallied three points in the victory with a goal and two assists.

Dani Cameranesi added a pair of assists.

The Gophers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Lorence lit the lamp at the 3:02 mark of the first period. She was assisted by Ramsey and Rachel Bona.

Just over three minutes later, Ramsey pushed the Gophers lead to 2-0 with her lone goal on the night. Ramsey assisted Cara Piazza on another goal later in the first.

The Gophers kept their foot on the gas early in the third with two more goals. Hannah Brandt and Kelly Pannek each scored in the third to lift Minnesota.

Minnesota and UMD continue the series on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.
