Rays manager: 'I'm not at all comparing' Arcia to Ortiz, but . . .

The Twins aren't shy when it comes to admitting they made a mistake by letting David Ortiz leave the organization in 2001. After hitting .272 with 20 homers as a 26-year-old in 2002, the Twins released him and he was picked up by the Red Sox.

Ortiz has been marching towards Cooperstown ever since.

Enter Oswaldo Arcia, the 25-year-old left-handed power hitter the Twins traded to the Tampa Bay Rays a couple of weeks ago. Arcia's ability to hit the ball out of the park and snap a bat over his knee has drawn some comparisons to Ortiz, but does the opinion of Rays manager Kevin Cash mean a little more?

"We’re intrigued a lot by him (Arcia),” Cash told FanGraphs. "If you go by what he’s capable of, and what he shows in batting practice, he has quite a bit. It’s probably more pitch recognition right now — that might be holding him up — but sometimes it takes guys a little bit longer."

Cash went on to mention how well Ortiz has done with a second chance, while adding that he's "not at all comparing" Arcia to Ortiz.

As for the Twins, Arcia told FanGraphs that he didn't think he was given much of a chance in Minnesota.

"I don’t think I got the opportunity to show what I could really do," said Arcia. "I know the class of player that I am. I don’t know that I got the time to show that."

Ortiz had six years with the Twins and more than 1,600 plate appearances before he was cut. Arcia was traded after fours years and 967 plate appearances.

For the record, the Twins have given a bunch of Arcia's would-be at-bats to Max Kepler and Kennys Vargas, who just so happen to be two of the hottest hitters in baseball right now.
