WNBA MVP Award goes to Lynx superstar Maya Moore

Minnesota Lynx star Maya Moore will be the runaway winner for the WNBA's Most Valuable Player Award, the league announced Thursday.

It's Moore's first career regular-season MVP and the first MVP in Lynx franchise history. Moore not only helped the Lynx to the No. 2-seed in the Western Conference playoffs, where they open tonight at home against the San Antonio Silver Stars, but she also led the league in trophies.

In addition to winning MVP, she was also named the Western Conference Player of the Month for August – her third consecutive player of the month award, and fifth in the last six months dating back to the 2013 season.

Moore (photo by Joe Bielawa) led the league in scoring with an average 23.9 points per game. She also set a WNBA record with 12 games of 30 or more points, including a career high 48 July 12 against Atlanta.

"The Monster." That's the nickname Los Angeles Sparks coach Penny Toler gave Moore, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“Maya is a great player,” Toler said. “To be honest with you, I’d be shocked if she wasn’t the M.V.P. this year. When they had injuries, a couple of games, she pretty much put them on her back and carried them to victory.”

If Moore can help lead the Lynx to another WNBA championship, she'll end up visiting the White House and the President for a seventh time. President Barack Obama joked during the Lynx' most recent visit to the White House that Moore has been there so often the building has a Maya Moore wing.

Minnesota has gone to three straight WNBA Finals, having won titles in 2011 and 2013.
