Report: Tampa Bay will sign ex-Gopher safety Derrick Wells

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to sign former Gophers safety Derrick Wells this week, according to Florida News-Press.

Wells didn't get drafted but has impressed the Buccaneers in workouts and meetings last week to the point that the Buccaneers offered him a contract.

"When I was in the locker room, they told me to take a quick shower and get my stuff and they were going to take me upstairs," Wells said. "The GM (Jason Licht) came in and congratulated us. I'm supposed to sign this week."

Wells was a three-year starter at safety and cornerback for the Gophers. He finished his career at the U of M with four interceptions, 1500 ESPN noted.

David Cobb in Tennessee

Rookie mini-camp is an evaluation period for the Tennessee Titans coaching staff, and they're keeping a close eye on former Gophers running back David Cobb. Running backs coach Sylvester Croom told The Tennessean what he likes about Cobb:

"David is what I would describe as an athletic big back. He can pound the ball up inside, fall forward and get some extra yards. But he has enough athleticism and enough vision to make people miss and gain yardage on his own. He can get more than what the offensive line gives him and that's important in this league."
