Reports: Khalid El-Amin to become head basketball coach at St. Thomas Academy

He'll reportedly coach the team he beat with a buzzer-beater in the 1996 state playoffs.

The kid who helped Minneapolis North stun St. Thomas Academy in the 1996 state basketball playoffs will reportedly become the new head coach of the St. Thomas Academy Cadets boys' varsity basketball team.

In a Twitter post, DeLaSalle head coach Travis Bledsoe congratulated El-Amin for being named the new head coach at St. Thomas Academy, and Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press tweeted that El-Amin will be the Cadets' next head coach.

Greg May, director of athletics and activities at the Mendota Heights private school, told Bring Me The News that the school has "not made an official hire."

As irony would have it, El-Amin will reportedly be the head coach of the team he hit a game-winner at the buzzer against while starring for Minneapolis North in the 1996 state playoffs.

He was a three-time All-State selection (leading North to three straight state titles in 1995-1997) and the 1997 Minnesota Mr. Basketball winner.

El-Amin went on to star at the University of Connecticut, leading the Huskies to the 1999 NCAA title.
