Minnesota United FC star midfielder Miguel Ibarra is being transferred to a high-level Mexican professional team.

The team confirmed the news Thursday that Ibarra is headed to Club Leon one of the teams in Mexico's top division.

Ibarra has been the undisputed face of the United. He was named the MVP of the North American Soccer League in 2014.

He will join Los Esmeraldas in time for the upcoming Apertura season, which runs from July through December.

"First of all I want to thank the organization for everything they've done for me," said Ibarra in a statement. "They have opened the doors for me to start my career in the beautiful state of Minnesota. They have worked so hard and that's why the team is where they are now, bigger and stronger than ever."

The news comes as the team is transitioning to Major League Soccer in 2017 or 2018.

The team says Ibarra will play his final match with Minnesota on Saturday then depart for Club Leon. The Star Tribune notes that as part of the transfer, Club Leon will return to play a friendly match against the Loons on July 18 in Blaine and Ibarra will play one half for each team.

Terms of the transfer agreement were not disclosed, but Pro Soccer Talk reports several MLS teams have inquired about Minnesota's asking price for Ibarra, which has been reported to be in the neighborhood of $1 million – an amount that MLS teams have balked at.
