Welcome to Minnesota, Pat Shurmur.

The Associated Press, citing a person with direct knowledge of the hire, reports Shurmur will join the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer is also reporting Shurmur will join Minnesota for the 2016 season.

The Vikings haven't confirmed the hire, but reports last week said the team was interviewing Shurmur for a spot on Mike Zimmer's staff. At least two other teams were also interested in Shurmur, reports said.

Adding Shurmur sends a "pretty clear message" the Vikings head coach wants to see more production from the offense in the upcoming season, NBC Sports says. Minnesota offense was ranked 29th last season, FOX Sports notes.

He'll be joining offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who is expected to stay with the team through next season, and the Viking's new offensive line coach Tony Sparano – both former head coaches with offensive coordinator experience, reports note.

It's not clear what role Shurmur – former offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles and interim head coach – will have with the team, but ESPN reports he probably wouldn't have ended his job search after one interview if the Vikings hadn't "pitched him a plan big enough to get home to put down roots in Minnesota."

Currently, the only opening on the Vikings' offensive staff is the running backs coaching job that was vacated by Kirby Wilson, who took a job with the Cleveland Browns. But because Shurmur has never coached running backs, he could have another role with the team.

NBC Sports says Shurmur may focus on the team's passing game because he also used to be a quarterbacks coach.
