The Wisconsin Badgers came up short in their bid for Rose Bowl glory Tuesday with a heartbreaking loss to Stanford 20-14, The Associated Press reports.

The game marked the first Rose Bowl victory for No. 8 Stanford since 1972, and the third consecutive Rose Bowl loss for Big Ten champion Wisconsin.

Stanford jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but a surge by the Badgers and only a field goal by the Cardinals tightened the score 17-14 at halftime.

The Cardinals shut down the Badgers offense the rest of the game, allowing only 82 yards in the second half, and kicked another field goal in the fourth quarter to secure the 20-14 victory.

Running back Montee Ball provided the only offensive spark for the Badgers, running for 100 yards and his FBS-record 83rd touchdown.

The Badgers finished 8-6 on the season, including a win over the Gophers in October, 38-13.
