Royals pound Pelfrey, Twins, 7-4

“If I was a crier – I probably would have cried."

That's the quote from Twins starter Mike Pelfrey after starting last week for the first time since undergoing Tommy John last year.

Good thing he's not a crier, because his second start was just flat out awful as he led the Twins to a loss in Kansas City, 7-4 Tuesday night.

The right-hander was rocked for five runs in the first inning and another in the second. That was his ballgame -- two innings, eight hits and six earned runs.

Making Pelfrey's start even more unimpressive is that Joe Mauer hit an opposite field home run in the top of the first inning, giving Pelfrey a one-run lead to work with.

Eduardo Escobar and Josh Willingham also homered for the Twins. Both were solo shots.

Minnesota rallied in the ninth to put a serious threat to the Royals' three run lead, but Mauer struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.

The series comes to a close Wednesday night. Liam Hendriks starts for the Twins. He'll be opposed by Wade Davis.
